Pond Life's Winter Pond-Keeping Tips
As we embrace the first cold snap of winter, Pond Life wishes everyone a safe and healthy year ahead. To help you care for your pond and its inhabitants during this chilly season, we’ve put together some essential tips and ideas.
Understanding Torpor in Pond Fish
As temperatures drop, your pond fish will stop feeding and become immobile. This state is known as “torpor.” Unlike hibernation, torpor isn’t constant—as the temperature rises, your fish may become active again, only to return to torpor when the temperature falls below 4°C.
While most fish won’t look for food during torpor, there are exceptions. Some koi are known to eat as soon as ice melts, and sturgeon thrive in cold, oxygen-rich conditions, though they cannot tolerate a completely frozen pond. If you decide to feed your fish, opt for all-year-round or specific cold-water food. We recommend Medikoi Wheatgerm and Garlic.
Ice Management
Never smash the ice on your pond, as this can shock and even kill your fish. Instead, consider these methods to prevent or manage ice:
Budget-Friendly Options
- Tennis Ball Trick: Float a tennis ball on the pond. In the morning, remove it to create a breathing hole for your fish, and place it back overnight.
- Heated Pan Method: Heat a pan of water and place its base on the surface of the pond to gently melt a hole. Avoid pouring hot water directly into the pond, as this can stress and harm your fish.
Invest in Pond Equipment
- Air Pumps and Heaters: These devices prevent the surface from freezing or gently heat a small area. Visit Pond Life, and we’ll help you choose the best option for your pond and budget.
Watch Out for Waterfalls
Frozen waterfalls can divert water out of the falls, potentially emptying your pond. To prevent this, either turn off your waterfall during freezing conditions or monitor it closely. Additionally, check for blockages caused by windblown debris from stormy weather.
