Hoplosternum Catfish are ideal for larger tanks and can coexist with medium-sized tankmates. Due to their large size, they should not be kept with smaller fish like neon tetras. It is recommended to keep these fish in groups of 5 or more, as they are social creatures that thrive in groups. Males may become aggressive when spawning, so close observation is necessary. Juveniles can be housed in a 4ft long tank, but adults require more space.
A soft sand substrate and plenty of hiding places are essential for their well-being. Hoplosternum Catfish are known to dig, so it is important to ensure that tank structures are secure. Dim lighting or the use of a blue moon light tube is recommended for viewing these nocturnal fish. Despite their resilience in the wild, maintaining proper tank conditions is crucial for their health. Medium-sized tankmates such as barbs, rainbowfish, tetras, rasboras, and cichlids are
