Aspiring fish enthusiasts often find themselves drawn to Lake Malawi Cichlids for their stunning colors, which rival those of reef-dwelling species.
These fish can be divided into two groups: Mbuna, known for their rock-dwelling behavior and aggressive nature, and the more placid Haps. However, these distinctions are not always clear, as some species exhibit hybrid traits. To minimize aggression, it is important to research compatible combinations and avoid mixing similar-looking species.
Unlike Mbuna, the Haps prefer more open tank layouts and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet. It is possible to create a community of less aggressive Mbuna and Haps in a large, well-filtered tank with frequent water changes. Alternatively, some keepers opt for a single male with multiple females, creating a colorful and lively display.
