The Koi betta is not a distinct species of betta fish, but a selectively bred variation of the Betta splendens species. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the result of a betta and traditional koi hybrid. In order to achieve its striking multi-colored appearance, koi bettas are selectively bred with other Betta variations that possess comparable color patterns to those of koi carp.
Unlike carp koi, which can grow quite large, their smaller size (2.5-3 inches) makes them ideal for home aquariums. What makes koi betta fish truly unique among other betta species is their distinct marble gene, giving them a white base color with striking black, red, yellow, or orange splotches. Some fancy variants also incorporate patches of blue or green for a truly eye-catching look.
