This small, yet stunning fish species made waves in the fishkeeping community in early 2007. Originally from small ponds filled with dense aquatic plants, Danio margaritatus can be found in shallow areas up to 30cm deep. It is best kept in groups of 10 or more in a home aquarium to promote security and increase breeding chances. Larger groups can also reduce any territorial squabbles between males, and the tank should have plenty of dense planting for the fish to retreat to if needed.
It is best to keep this species in a tank with only other small and peaceful fish. Keeping 2 or 3 females for every male is recommended. Interestingly, the recently discovered and yet unnamed Rosy Loach (Petruichthys sp.) was found living alongside D. margaritatus in the wild. Unfortunately, the sudden popularity of D. margaritatus in the hobby led to significant damage to its natural habitat, prompting protective measures to be put in place
